Three Neat Places to Make a St. Francisville Getaway Come True!

If you are looking for something to do on a long weekend or holiday that will provide great fun, while at the same time highlighting some great Louisiana history, consider visiting some of the neat locations in St. Francisville highlighted below.

Historic sites, including plantation homes, are abundant in the St. Francisville area but what many do not realize is that there are a few which are actually run by the Louisiana State Park System.  For this reason, I highly suggest purchasing a State Park Pass and visiting the sites featured below to capitalize on the savings.  A pass is $80 and allows ALL traveling in your vehicle admission to all state parks and state historic sites.   It will certainly pay for itself by visiting the sites suggested below.   The pass is good for a year which will give you time to explore other offerings in Louisiana (See our blog posts outlining other exciting Louisiana State Parks).  Our Frugal Family Travelers have certainly made memories while visiting these sites and yours are sure to do so as well.

Featured in the pictures below is the Audubon State Historic Site located at Oakley Plantation in the outskirts of St. Francisille, LA.  The famous wildlife artist, John James Audubon, lived here for over three months in 1821.  While hired as a tutor for the daughter of the Pirrie family, he painted over thirty of his famous bird paintings.  Oakley Plantation was built circa 1800 and is an excellent example of a Federal period plantation home.   After touring the home, take a leisurely stroll on the grounds to explore the garden, nature trail, outdoor kitchen, and slave cabins or rock on the porch while playing a game of checkers.  You might even run into a friendly peacock!

The next place on our Frugal Family adventure was Centenary State Historic Site in the nearby town of Jackson, LA.   All that remains of the original buildings from the 1800's are the west wing and professor's cottage.   Both buildings contain period furnishings similar to the types used by students in attendance at the college in the 1800's. We were particularly fascinated by the well-preserved graffiti walls created by students (see picture below and note the date).   Due to low enrollment after the Civil War ended combined with a desperate need for repairs, Centenary College closed and was eventually relocated to Shreveport, LA.  Fortunately, the state was able to purchase the property and designate it as a historic site for all to enjoy!

The Greater Baton Rouge Model Railroaders and Old Hickory Railroad are housed at the same location in Jackson, LA and are right down the road from the Old Centenary College site featured above.   Unfortunately, the passenger railroad which took riders on a journey around this historic town has not reopened.  However, according to the workers at the site, it set for a possible reopening in July.   Follow the updates on their web-site for a definite date.   If your Frugal Family Travelers enjoy model trains, be sure and stop by.   An extensive number of train displays, including steam and electric powered, are open and running on the second and forth Saturday of each month from 11-4:00 p.m.  Admission is free.   When the passenger train returns to service, a fare will be charged for riders.

Natchitoches Itinerary Day 3......Fort St. Jean Baptiste

Our Frugal Family Travelers are taking our readers on a vacation adventure to the Natchitoches, LA area.  Day 1 of our itinerary featured the adventures to be had with your family at Hodges Gardens State Park.  If you missed "Day 1" and want to catch up, "click here".  Day 2 of our itinerary featured our exciting white water adventure on the Kisatchie Bayou in the Kisatchie National Forest.   "Click here" to view this itinerary.

Day 3:
Kids + History = Boring......not for our Frugal Family Travelers and not for your crew either, IF
you find immersive experiences for them.  Living history can be engaging and fun for both children and adults, if it is interactive!  For this reason we enjoyed our visit to Fort St. Jean Baptiste.  Upon arrival, we viewed the exhibit in the lobby and then a brief film which outlined the history of the Fort.   After this, a short walk was taken to the entrance of the fort, where we were greeted by a man in period costume who gave us an artillery demonstration. From there, we proceeded into the fort, where we made all sorts of discoveries.   Our Frugal Family Travelers particularly enjoyed making sparks with flint to see how fires were started long ago. This is something children can read about in a textbook but truly becomes a real part of them when experienced! From the pictures and video you can see the awesome experience we shared as a family, all while keeping more dollars in the bank!   I won't review all of the historical information about the fort but if you want to read about it before your visit you can always do so on the website.  The Louisiana State Parks system not only features great parks for recreation but numerous historic sites like the one we discovered in Natchitoches, as well.  When planning a trip, I encourage you to examine the state parks and historic sites in the areas you plan to visit!

Tips:
*Pack water sunscreen and insect repellent!
* Again, consider a purchasing a state park pass.  Click here for details.

Note:
Be sure and check out the letterboxes in this area! To learn more about letterboxing, click here to read our blog about it!  Coming soon..........Park Hopping is not just for those in Disney World!!!

Be a Tourist in Your Own Town: Bayou Segnette Wave Pool, BaratariaPreserve-Jean Lafitte National Historical Park & Preserve

Our Frugal Family Travelers love hiking and especially love cooling off after the experience to beat the heat of a South Louisiana summer day!  Pair Bayou Segnette State Park's wave pool with a visit to Jean Lafitte's National Historic Park and Preserve to create a full day of adventure or a quick weekend/mini vacation for your family, that's not to be forgotten!

Bayou Segnette State Park is located in Westwego and offers a great wave pool with an adjacent splash area for the younger travelers.  Other activities available at the park include, camping, boating, canoeing, hiking, playgrounds and picnicking!  Admission into the park is $2  but consider purchasing an annual pass to the state park to capitalize on the extra savings.  Admission into the wave pool is $10 for adults and $8 for children.

A short distance away is the Barataria Preserve-Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve.  This area is managed by the National Park Service and features 20,000 acres consisting of swamps, forests, hiking trails on boardwalks and a visitor center with exhibits.  It's a great place to experience the beauty of the southern swamplands.  Our Frugal Family Travelers particularly enjoyed the overlook of the swamp that is located on one of the boardwalk trails.  We even saw an alligator nesting in its natural habitat.

Tips:
Bring Towels, sunscreen, water
You may also want to consider pairing this with the New Orleans museum selections , Crescent Park or letterboxing information previously posted on our blog to extend the adventure with your family. -Click highlighted text for more information.

Note:
Remember that admission to the water park at Bayou Segnette State Park requires $2 admission into the park as well as a wave pool admission.   Consider purchasing a yearly pass to the state park system, which is approximately $80 dollars.  It is good for all travelers in one car and van and good for a year.
