Exploring the Bounty in Nature: A Frugal Family Adventure

Our Frugal Family Travelers recently embarked on an excursion to McLeod Park, a hidden gem nestled in the heart of nature's paradise in Kiln, MS.   With the intention to hike the approximately 1.3-mile trail, we were eager to experience the tranquility and beauty that awaited us. Known for its easy loop trail, which gracefully winds its way along the Jourdan River, McLeod Park offers an idyllic shaded setting for one with a desire to hike during a time when temperatures are high during the summer months. What's more, its convenient proximity to both New Orleans and coastal Mississippi makes it an ideal destination for an affordable family getaway.

As we began our hike along the well-maintained trail, we were immediately captivated by the serenity around us. The trail's lush foliage created a shaded canopy to help us savor each step. The highlight of our hike was walking alongside the  Jourdan River, where we paused to enjoy the pearly white sandy river banks and wildlife.  McLeod Park truly provides a sanctuary for both wildlife enthusiasts and families seeking a tranquil escape from the bustle of everyday life.

McLeod Park offers more than just hiking trails and opportunities to observe wildlife. For families with younger adventurers, the park boasts a delightful splash pad, providing a refreshing respite from the summer heat.   If you have teens, they may enjoy the extensive disc golf course on property.  McLeod Park caters to visitors of all ages, ensuring that everyone can partake in the joys of outdoor recreation and create cherished memories.

Its close proximity to major urban centers ensures that even Frugal Family Travelers can enjoy a rejuvenating retreat without venturing too far from home or breaking the bank!

Canopied Hiking Paradise

If you and your Frugal Family Travelers are looking for something to do in the great outdoors, consider visiting the Mary Ann Brown Preserve in St.  Francisville.  Although in Louisiana, just outside Baton Rouge,  the terrain is quite hilly with several overlooks and bridges, which traverse over creek beds.  These features make the preserve a beautiful place for those seeking a hiking opportunity with a more rugged mountainous feel.   The trail is also completely canopied with trees which makes it the perfect hike on a hot day.  Also appealing is the opportunity to group this excursion with other attractions in the area to create a weekend or longer getaway (see links below pictures).
