Waterfalls in Louisiana

Who knew that waterfalls could be found right outside of St. Francisville, LA?  When I think of waterfalls, Louisiana and Mississippi don't immediately come to mind!! However, just over the Louisiana border is Clark Creek Natural/Nature Area, located in Woodville, MS.  Our Frugal Family Travelers love this spot for its unique topography and close driving distance.   We recently spent the day here hiking and exploring several of the waterfalls.  There are many trails in this area and it is truly a place where you can "choose your own adventure."  There are seven waterfalls on the map.  Our favorite adventure was hiking the creek bed to the base of one of the falls!  This adventure was definitely a confidence builder for our Frugal Family Travelers and they felt such a sense of accomplishment from this experience!  Our small travelers had a blast searching for the perfect walking stick and interesting rocks.  If your family enjoys adventure, beautiful scenery and the amazing sound of falling water as it splashes on the rocks in its path, then plan a visit here! You will not be disappointed!

Tips:
*Pack plenty of water and snacks!!
*Be aware that the area is quite hilly and hiking can be strenuous at times.
*There is an honor box in which to place a nominal fee!
*Trails are pet-friendly.
*Try to plan your trip after this area has had some significant rainfall.  The waterfalls are more impressive!
*This is about a 2 hour drive from the New Orleans/Slidell, Louisiana area just outside of St. Francisville, LA.

Note:  Future posts will discuss how to combine this location with others to make an entire Frugal Family vacation!!

Directions: Clark Creek Natural Area, 366 Fort Adams Road, Woodville, MS 39669, (601) 888-6040.

Fun on the Bayou.........Camp Salmen Nature Park!!

Our Frugal Family Travelers LOVE to be outside!  For this reason we are frequent visitors to the Camp Salmen Nature Park located just off HWY 190 in Slidell, LA.  Nestled along the beautiful Bayou Liberty, this park has picturesque views!   Wooded hiking trails, scenic bayou overlooks, a 200 year old French Creole cottage, draping oaks, and a beautiful playground are just some of the things your Frugal Family Travelers will discover here!  There are lots of opportunities for discovery and this park requires no admission! Our kids loved climbing on the old oak trees and telling tales of ghosts living in the old cottage!

Tips:
*Be sure to pack a picnic lunch to enjoy in one of the many picnic areas located  throughout this extensive property.
*Small travelers may enjoy having a bug box!
*This park is being developed in phases so some of the trails are not well marked!  Don't worry trail maps are available or talk with a park ranger on duty!
*Bring a camera......this is a great place for family photos!!
*There are geocaches nearby so if that is something you enjoy, be sure to check it out!!
*If you want to plan an even more exciting day of adventure for your Frugal Family Travelers, consider packing a bathing suit and hopping over to Heritage Park!  It is a short driving distance away and offers a splash pad!

Note:  More to come in future posts regarding splash pads, park hopping and geocaching!!

Directions: Camp Salmen Nature Park, 35122 Parish Parkway, Slidell, LA 70460

White Water Fun in Mississippi!!

What family doesn't like to beat the summer heat?   Yes, there are the community swimming pools and expensive water parks as options, but what about white water?  Located approximately 45 minutes northwest of Hattiesburg, MS and touted as one of Mississippi's "best kept secrets", are D'Lo and Merit Water Parks.    Our Frugal Family Travelers enjoyed swimming and frolicking in the white water for free! However, canoeing, tubing and cabins are available for a nominal fee.  This excursion is not only guaranteed to please the kids and teens in your family but the adult travelers as well.

Tips:  Bring sun screen, bug spray and tubes!

Note: D'Lo and Merit Water Parks are within a short driving distance of one another!
